Quick, practical tips from our workbench.

Charge between 20% and 80%

Lithium batteries age fastest at the extremes. Keeping a phone or laptop roughly between 20% and 80% most of the time can add a year or more to battery life.

Skip the rice — power off instead

If a device gets wet, the best first move is to power it off, do not charge it, and bring it in fast. Rice does little; a proper cleaning stops corrosion before it spreads.

A tempered-glass protector is cheap insurance

A $10 screen protector absorbs the drop that would otherwise crack a $200 display. Replace it the moment it chips.

Back up before any repair

Hardware repairs are usually data-safe, but accidents happen. Back up photos and files to the cloud or a computer before you hand a device to anyone — including us.
